Sus fotografías de Nirvana nos proporcionaron algunas de las imágenes más duraderas e icónicas; al imaginar la banda es difícil no evocar una imagen desde la visión de Steve Gullick.
Ahora Steve ha reunido el photobook definitivo de su trabajo con Nirvana y las bandas que cabalgaban a su lado, como Mudhoney, Jesus Lizard, Screaming Trees, Hole y Soundgarden. Un libro con 196 páginas que contiene impresionantes reproducciones de lo ya icónico, así como fotografías inéditas acompañadas de recuerdos de Steve y un prólogo por Everett True.
«NIRVANA entró en mi vida en octubre de 1990 cuando escuché ‘Sliver’ en el programa de John Peel, el acuerdo fue sellado al escuchar la bella y brutal sesión que grabaron para el show de John en su primera actuación principal de Londres en el teatro Astoria ese mismo mes. En ese momento yo era un fotógrafo para un periódico semanal de música, Sounds, al instante se convirtió en mi ambición de trabajar con la banda.

From classic shots of Nirvana, Nick Cave, The Prodigy, Patti Smith, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters and many more, his photos have appeared in The Times, Mojo, Rolling Stone, Wire, Q and NME to name but a few. His photographs of Nirvana provided us with some of the most lasting and iconic images, when imagining the band it’s hard not to conjure up an image that was the vision of Steve Gullick.
Now Steve has put together the definitive photo book of his work with Nirvana & the bands that rode shotgun including Mudhoney, Jesus Lizard, Screaming Trees, Hole & Soundgarden. A 196 page coffee table book containing stunning reproductions of the already iconic as well as unseen photographs accompanied with Steve’s recollections and a forward by Everett True.
“NIRVANA entered my life in October 1990 when I heard ‘Sliver’ on the John Peel show, the deal was sealed upon hearing the beautifully brutal session they recorded for John’s show and their first London headline performance at the Astoria theatre that same month. At the time I was a photographer for weekly music paper Sounds, it instantly became my ambition to work with the band.

The Breeders tocarán nuevo material en la carretera

Pero mientras que muchas cosas han cambiado, otras siguen igual, y durante el tour de 60 conciertos de Last Splash, The Breeders han comenzado a trabajar en nuevo material. El sonido está todavia basado en guitarras fuertes con una atmósfera rock que hizo que Kurt Cobain considerase a los Breeders una de sus bandas favoritas y que más le influyó.
Descrito por Deal como»casi terminado hasta la mitad», el nuevo material no tiene todavía ningún nombre tangible con planes de grabación fijados – o, al menos, no anunciado – pero la banda estará debutando algunos de las nuevas canciones a medida que planifican un largo mes que terminará con un concierto en el Hollywood Bowl de Los Ángeles con Neutral Milk Hotel.
Y mientras se preparaban para salir a la carretera de nuevo, The Breeders – al menos esta encarnación de ellos – se encontraron escribiendo y ensayando en el mismo sótano en Dayton donde todo comenzó relativamente para el grupo. Pero mientras Deal dijo que estaba entusiasmada pot el nuevo material, echó por tierra todos los comentarios que pudieran decir que los ensayos estuviesen siendo muy motivantes:

But while many things have changed, many others have remained the same, and during the Last Splash revisited 60-gig world tour, The Breeders naturally began working on new material. The sound is still heavily guitar based with the “atmospheric” rock instrumentation that lead Kurt Cobain to famously call The Breeders one of his favorite and most influential bands.
Described by Deal as being “almost half-way completed,” the new material has yet no technical or tangible name with recording plans still unmade — or, at least, untold, but the band will be debuting some of the material as they plan a month-long run that culminates with a show at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles with Neutral Milk Hotel.
And as they prepared to hit the road again, The Breeders — at least this incarnation of them — found themselves writing and rehearsing in the same basement in Dayton where it all relatively began for the group. But while Deal said she’s excited about the new material she quickly cast-off any speculation that the rehearsals are nearly as captivating as some might think.
“It’s so boring!” Deal confessed with humble laughter and a mock-stoner voice, “We just play things over and over again. It’s like, ‘Can we try that again? It just didn’t sound right, man. I mean, what are you doing in the first verse, anyway?’”

Maranda Pleasant: ¿Qué te hace sentir vivo?
Doni Blair: Suena a cliché, pero hacer música con mi banda me hace tener vida. Siempre ha sido así y siempre lo será. ¡Es por eso que lo hago!
MP: ¿Qué te hace sentir vulnerable?
DB: Cuando presento algo que he creado, ya se trate de una pieza de música, una idea, etc, y mostrarlo a otras personas.
MP: ¿Si pudieras decirle algo a todos en el planeta, ¿qué sería?
DB: Intenta arreglártelas obviando las religiones. Demasiada sangre se ha derramado en la premisa de cómo la gente debe creer.
MP: ¿Qué te gustaría que la gente preguntará?
DB: ¿Cuál es mi café favorito? Respuesta: Dazbog!
MP: ¿Cómo manejar el dolor emocional?
DB: Trabajar. Es bueno hablar, pero a mí me resulta más fácil estar ocupado para superarlo.
MP: ¿Cómo mantienes el control en medio del caos? ¿Tienes una rutina diaria?
DB: Por suerte, tengo la mejor esposa del mundo. Ella es mi centro de todo lo bueno o malo. Mi rutina sería, primero, besar a mi esposa, luego ir al gimnasio o trabajar en alguna otra actividad de cardio. Cuando las cosas se ponen difíciles, ¡hacer ejercicio!
MP: ¿Cuál ha sido una de tus lecciones más grandes hasta el momento en tu vida?
DB: El saber que aunque esté ya con los cuarenta y tantos años, todavía me quedan muchas lecciones que aprender en la vida. Me resulta emocionante.
MP: ¿Qué verdad sabes a ciencia cierta?
DB: Lo único que sé con certeza es que soy amado por las personas que me rodean y que me encanta la gente que me rodea.
MP: Cuéntame algo acerca de tus últimos proyectos.
DB: Los Toadies están de gira por el veinte aniversario de Rubberneck. Se ha vendido todo prácticamente en los conciertos. Acabamos de terminar un nuevo disco de versiones de antiguas canciones en el que también las hay nuevas, aunque todo visto con una lente diferente. Estamos todos muy entusiasmados con él.

Maranda Pleasant: What makes you come alive?
Doni Blair: It sounds cliché, but playing music with my band makes me come alive. Always has and always will. That’s why I do it!
MP: What makes you feel vulnerable?
DB: When I present something that I have created, whether it be a piece of music, an idea, etc., and show it to other people.
MP: If you could say something to everyone on the planet, what would it be?
DB: Try to get along regardless of religion. Too much blood has been spilled on the premise of how people should believe.
MP: What do you wish people would ask you?
DB: What’s my favorite coffee? Answer: Dazbog!
MP: How do you handle emotional pain?
DB: Work. It helps to talk, but I find just being busy allows me to get through it.
MP: How do you keep your center in the middle of chaos? Do you have a daily routine?
DB: Luckily, I have the best wife in the world. She’s my center for everything good or bad. My routine would be first kissing my wife, then working out at the gym or some other cardio-related activity. When things get rough, work out!
MP: What’s been one of your biggest lessons so far in life?
DB: The realization that although I might be in my early forties, I still have a lot of lessons to learn about life. I find it exciting.
MP: What truth do you know for sure?
DB: The only thing I know for sure is that I’m loved by the people around me and I love the people around me.
MP: Tell me about your latest projects.
DB: The Toadies are touring for the twentieth-anniversary release of Rubberneck. It’s been sold-out crowds pretty much every night. We just completed a new record of previously released and new Toadies songs but rearranged through a different lens. We’re all very excited about it.
