‘No Seattle’ highlights lesser known NW rock acts | Record preview

El boom del Grunge en los 90s no ocurrió sin precedentes. Antes de que el mundo hubiera escuchado a Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden y Alice in Chains, los clubs del noroeste ya estaban enganchados al sonido de grupos como Hitting Birth, Vampire Lezbos, Chemistry Set, y Thrillerhammer.

“Loser: The Real Seattle Music Story” de Clark Humphrey y “Everybody Loves Our Town” de Mark Yarm son unos de los cuantos libros que ponen la escena del Grunge en su verdadero contexto. Ahora viene el equivalente en audio. “No Seattle: Forgotten Sounds of the North-West Grunge Era 1986-97,” se lanzará el 9 de septiembre, en CD, vinilo y formatos digitales.

La compilación contiene 23 diferentes bandas, generalmente desconocidas hoy pero con algunos nombres conocidos en sus formaciones. The Ones tenían a Jack Endino en el bajo, antes de que Endino se convirtiera en el productor de Sub Pop en la época floreciente del Grunge. Cuando Bundle of Hiss decidieron separarse, el batería Dan Peters se unió (y todavía toca con ellos) a Mudhoney, mientras que el bajista Kurt Danielson se fue con los pesos pesados TAD. Y después de su aventura con Kill Sybil, la batería Patty Schemel se convirtió en la batería de Hole.

The grunge boom of the ’90s didn’t happen in a vacuum. Before the world had heard of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains, Northwest clubs were ringing to the sounds of acts like Hitting Birth, Vampire Lezbos, Chemistry Set, and Thrillerhammer.

Clark Humphrey’s “Loser: The Real Seattle Music Story” and Mark Yarm’s oral history “Everybody Loves Our Town” were among the few books that put the grunge scene in this wider context. Now comes the audio equivalent, “No Seattle: Forgotten Sounds of the North-West Grunge Era 1986-97,” set for release September 9, in CD, vinyl, and digital formats.

The compilation features 23 different bands, largely unknown today but featuring a fair number of familiar names in the lineups. The Ones featured Jack Endino on bass, before Endino became Sub Pop’s go-to producer for the burgeoning Seattle music scene. When Bundle of Hiss went their separate ways, drummer Dan Peters joined (and still plays with) Mudhoney, while bassist Kurt Danielson took up with the heavyweight TAD. And after her tenure in Kill Sybil, drummer Patty Schemel became the drummer for Hole.

Courtney Barnett toca “Cannonball” de The Breeders

Courtney Barnett covers The Breeders’ “Cannonball”

La guitarrista y cantante australiana, Courtney Barnett, perece que vino de la nada el año pasado con un par de fantásticos EP que fueron coleccionado en los Estados Unidos como Double EP: A Sea Of Split Peas. Su formas relajadas trajeron algunas comparaciones con Pavement, pero eso no cuenta toda la historia-sobre todo en directo, donde Barnett y su trío mejoran las cosas considerablemente. El clásico de The Breeders de 1993 parecía un ajuste perfecto cuando Barnett lo eligió, y resulta que la canción es un punto de partida para el debut de larga duración de Barnett, que presumiblemente saldrá a finales de este año. Australian singer-guitarist Courtney Barnett seemed to come out of nowhere last year with a pair of fantastic EPs that were collected in the States as The Double EP: A Sea Of Split Peas. Her laid-back delivery brought some Pavement comparisons, but that doesn’t tell the whole story—especially live, where Barnett and her trio rev things up considerably. The Breeders’ 1993 classic seemed like a perfect fit when Barnett chose it, and it turns out the song was a starting point for Barnett’s debut full-length, which will presumably be out later this year. A la venta la silla del vídeo de “Angry Chair” de Alice In Chains

Original “Angry Chair” from Alice In Chains music video sold online

Apareció recientemente un anuncio en Craiglist en el que se vende la auténtica silla en la que se sentó Layne Staley, vocalista de Alice In Chains, en el vídeo de “Angry Chair”. Parece ser que el vendedor fue asistente de producción del clip grabado en 1992 y tras el rodaje se la llevó a casa.

Ahora sin embargo, anda deshaciéndose de cosas y ha decidido poner a la venta la silla por 1.500 dólares indicando, eso si, que “el dinero no me importa, solo quiero darle a la silla un buen hogar“, de ahí que pida 1500 dólares, claro. Por ello pide a los interesados que le digan su álbum favorito del grupo para ver si “estás lo suficientemente cabreado para tener la silla.”

pd: el enlace ya no está disponible, por lo que supongo que la silla se habrá vendido.

some background: i was a PA on the video way back when, and after the shoot wrapped, took the chair home. since then, it’s just been sitting in my garage collecting dust. i hate to sell it, but i need to downsize. plus i’m clean now and have two kids, and i’m just not as angry as i used to be. the chair is perfect for sitting in and just raging out. a few dents, but in otherwise great condition.

$1,500 OBO — if interested, email with your favorite AIC album and why you think you’re angry enough for the chair. money isnt important to me, just want to give the angry chair a good home.
