De acuerdo a una entrevista que Alternative Nation ha hecho a un amigo de Layne Staley, el malogrado frontman de Alice In Chains, fue un firme candidato a ser el vocalista de Audioslave.
Morgan Gallagher recuerda encontrarse a Staley en 2001.
Hacía años que no le veía y no estaba preparado para ello. A esas alturas había dejado (Alice In Chains), había perdido la mayoría de dientes y pesaba poco más de 45 kilos. Hablamos un ratito y cuando nos despedimos lloré.
Hablando de un encuentro que mantuvo en una fiesta de la Super Bowl, el 28 de enero de 2001, asegura que el cantante le explicó la posibilidad de formar parte del grupo que estaban preparando los miembros de Rage Against The Machine (Tom Morello, Brad Wilk y Tim Commerford).
Dos semanas después (un amigo en común) organizó una fiesta por la Super Bowl. Al llegar, Layne abrió la puerta y volvía a ser el viejo Layne. Estaba a tope así que fuimos a la guerra. ¡Corríamos por ahí como dos niños! No hace falta que diga que nos perdimos el partido y hicimos que casi nadie lograra verlo.
Ese día estuvimos hablando y dijo que había recibido una llamada de los antiguos miembros de Rage Against The Machine, que andaban montando un nuevo proyecto y querían hacerle una audición. Me dijo que iba a volver a tratamiento y luego a Los Angeles para hacer la audición un par de meses después. No llegó así que Chris Cornell se hizo con el puesto.
Cuenta asimismo que cree que el vocalista había pasado página de Alice In Chains y buscaba enfrentarse a nuevos retos. Así tenía prevista una colaboración en el excelente segundo disco de Taproot, “Welcome”, producido por Toby Wright, pero no se pudo llegar a hacer al morir antes.
Gallagher era amigo de Staley desde 1986.

While late Alice In Chains frontman Layne Staley was largely reclusive during his later years, the legendary singer considered fronting the band that later became known as Audioslave in January 2001. Zack de la Rocha had quit Rage Against The Machine just a few months prior, and his bandmates were looking for a new singer. Alternative Nation reporter, and early Staley collaborator, Tim Branom has connected us with Layne’s friend Morgen Gallagher, who told Alternative Nation this exclusive story.
Gallagher had been friends with Staley since 1986, even living with him and Sleze bassist Mike Mitchell for a period in the 80’s. By early 2001, it had been a couple of years since he had seen his old friend, so he was very surprised when he ran into him at a party.
“I hadn’t seen him in a couple of years and wasn’t prepared for it. By this point he had quit [Alice In Chains], he had lost most of his teeth, and weighed barley 100 pounds. We talked for a little and when we parted ways, I cried.”
This wasn’t the last time Gallagher saw Staley. On January 28, 2001, he saw Layne again at a Super Bowl party. “So two weeks later [our mutual friend] was having a Super Bowl party. When I got there, Layne answered the door and he was back to the old Layne. He had just gotten pretty much the entire Nerf arsenal, so we went to war. We were running around like two little kids! Needless to say, we missed the game and kept pretty much everyone else from watching it as well.”
“That day we were talking and he said he had gotten a call from the old Rage Against The Machine members and they were putting together a new project, and they wanted him to audition. He said he was going back to treatment and then going to LA to do the audition in a couple of months. He never made it, so Chris Cornell went and got the job.”
Staley also appeared to have moved on from Alice In Chains, according to Gallagher when Alternative Nation asked if Staley opened up at all about his status with the band, “Not really, he was pretty evasive about it, but it seemed like he was pretty much done with the band at that point. He hadn’t played with them for a while, and he was talking about auditioning for new projects.”
Staley was scheduled to record vocals for the band Taproot in 2002, but died before he could attend a recording session with producer Toby Wright, according to Mark Yarm’s Everybody Loves Our Town: An Oral History of Grunge. Gallagher also told author David de Sola a shorter version of this Audioslave story, which is briefly mentioned in the upcoming Alice In Chains: The Untold Story book.

Former Audioslave/Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello discussed Chris Cornell in a new interview with Radio.com. Morello recalled playing with Cornell at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame:
“I love Chris and consider him a great friend. The Hall of Fame jam was nice, but a little chaotic. Playing with him in Seattle, that was just fantastic. I love that guy. He’s one of the most talented vocalists in the history of vocalists. And to be able to play the songs that we wrote together, it was awesome and so much fun. I hope we do something like that again.”

Me sorprendió que no hubiera ninguna pregunta sobre la historia de Jackie Fox. Su violación ocurrió delante de una sala llena de gente, incluyendo a dos de sus compañeras de banda, Cherie Currie y Joan Jett. En el curso de la investigación del artículo y la divulgación sobre lo que le pasó a Fox, muchos transeúntes se han presentado, afirmando lo que vieron y quienes estuvieron presentes esa noche en 1975.

I was shocked that there was any question about Jackie Fox’s story. Her rape happened in front a roomful of people, including two of her bandmates, Cherie Currie and Joan Jett. In the course of the article’s investigation and Fox’s disclosure, many bystanders have come forward, affirming what they saw and who was present that night in 1975.
The majority of the response to Fox’s story was positive and supportive. Go-Go’s guitarist Kathy Valentine, who had professional contact with Fowley, posted a poignant statement on Facebook that said in part:
“Jackie is incredibly brave for finally speaking out about this. I told her, and I will say it here too: she has done FAR more for women by speaking out than the Runaways ever did.”
Fox’s support also originally included lead singer Currie, who called Fox “courageous.” Currie wrote an account of the rape in her 2011 memoir, without naming Jackie, who at that time was not yet ready to come forward publicly. However, guitarist and newly inducted Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Joan Jett was noticeably quiet and non-committal, sticking to a vague statement to The Huffington Post that essentially denied Jackie’s account:
Through a representative, Jett “denied witnessing the event as it has been described here.” Her representative referred all further questions to Jackie “as it’s a matter involving her and she can speak for herself.”

Ahora, enfermero en un hospital de California del norte, Stauffer ha dejado eso de saltar y cantar con la banda por el escenario. Pero si consigues persuadirle estará encantado de compartir sus sentimientos acerca de los seis discos de Seaweed.
Formada en 1989 cuando el Grunge estaba cobrando forma, Seaweed nunca perteneció del todo a la famosa escena musical de Seattle, pero mantuvo un parentesco con muchas de las bandas de la ciudad, así como con los sellos de la época. “I can rank with the best of them. Whatever anybody wants me to rank, I will fucking rank that shit.” Those are the words of Aaron Stauffer, frontman for the now mostly dormant Tacoma punk band Seaweed. Now a nurse at a Northern California hospital, Stauffer has mostly left behind his career of jumping around on stage and screaming along to his band’s cranked melodies. But get him on the horn and he will gladly share his feelings about all six of Seaweed’s records.
Formed in 1989 just as grunge was coming to life about 40 minutes up the I-5, Seaweed never quite belonged in Seattle’s famous music scene, but found a kinship with many of the city’s bands, as well as a home with its groundbreaking label. They weren’t grunge, nor were they straight up pop punk or hardcore or metal—all of which they were called at some point—but a little of each. Seaweed had a pretty good run in their first decade, playing the first instalment of the Warped Tour, earning indifferent comments from Beavis & Butt-head, and seeing their Fleetwood Mac cover become a single from the Clerks soundtrack. They also released three albums on Sub Pop before they knowingly made the ultimate clichéd decision to sign to a major label—one owned by Mickey Mouse himself. Of course, it didn’t take long for that to go bust, but thankfully a pre-existing bond with the folks at Merge Records gave them a shot at redeeming themselves.

If you’re a pop musician of South Asian descent, not many like you have yet reached the toppermost of the poppermost. Some really famous ones include M.I.A., Norah Jones and Tony Kanal from No Doubt. Soundgarden lead guitarist Kim Thayil, whose folks came from India, was among the first. As a kid, acclaimed new singer-songwriter Bhi Bhiman, whose family emigrated from Sri Lanka, looked to Thayil as something of a role model. Which was wise, because Thayil is one of the brightest, coolest rock musicians one could hope to meet.
Now Bhiman and Thayil aren’t just mutual fans, they’re also friends. We put them together at KEXP’s studios in Seattle for a Talkhouse Music Podcast, and sure, they talked about being self-described “outsiders in rock & roll,” but they talked about a lot of other interesting things, too: their musical backstories, ruminations on the nature of pleasure and pain, the role of baseball in assimilation, their first guitars, the Chi-Lites, Nirvana’s nickname for Thayil, dealing with fans and, perhaps most important of all, the meaning of the word “epistemological.”
