Ben Shepherd y Matt Cameron de Soundgarden, Dimitri Coats de Off! y Alain Johannes han unido sus talentos en un nuevo proyecto aún sin nombre.
Coats -que cantará junto a Johannes- ha explicado a Billboard como empezó el proyecto.
Le dije, “¡Tío! ¡Soy un gran fan!” Le dije, “Me considero un excelente ‘air drummer’ y me cuesta tocar algunas de tus partes”. Y me dijo, “Guau, eso significa mucho viniendo de ti porque soy un gran fan tuyo”. Nos hicimos amigos al momento.
Entonces, el batería le presentó un proyecto que empezó junto a Shepherd y Johannes en 2008, y que quería volver a relanzar.
Fue como, “Dios, dejadme meterme en eso”. Me invitaron a Seattle y fue increíble. Hubo una química instantánea y realmente creativa y una situación donde todo el mundo se pasa la guitarra y se lanza ideas. Me dio la sensación de estar en los Beatles grunge.
Creo que todos estamos en situaciones nuestras bandas en las que no llegamos a expresarnos como queremos y esto es una oportunidad de sacar algunos de esos otros colores en nuestras composiciones. Todos esos tíos saben componer canciones. Todos saben cantar. Todos saben tocar la guitarra y diferentes instrumentos. Esos tíos son músicos de altísimo nivel – a veces me siento en plan, “¿Qué estoy haciendo aquí?”
Del sonido cuenta que “todos somos fans de un amplio espectro de música” y aunque reconoce que la banda suele ir hacia el lado “realmente heavy y doom pero tiene un poco de todo.”
Amplia explicando que:
Es un poco más reposado de lo que podía haber pesado pero en un modo positivo. Hay momentos heavy, blueseros y luego hay también cosas realmente bonitas. Es un poco en plan “Superunknown”, esa época de Soundgarden, mezclado con el rollo tipo Stevie Wonder de Alain. Y a mi me llaman el arma secreta; soy algo brusco pero tengo muchas buenas ideas.
El proyecto lo califica de “divertido proyecto paralelo” que quizá edite algo de material antes de fin de año.
Creo que hemos grabado las bases de algo así como 10 temas. Cantaré yo. Alain cantará un poco. Quizá invitemos a alguien más en algún momento.
El músico añade:
Yo aquí aprovecho el viaje. Esos tíos se conocen de toda la vida; yo soy el nuevo. No sé si tocaremos en directo o qué. Yo solo sé que me encanta salir con esos tíos y estoy aprendiendo mucho y trabajamos muy rápido; antes de que incluso me haya aprendido una canción ya estamos grabando. Hay cierta imprecisión de Off! – no la música pero si la manera en que hacemos música.

Soundgarden’s Matt Cameron and Ben Shepherd, Dimitri Coats of Off! and Alain Johannes — formerly of Eleven, Queens of the Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures — have joined forces for what Coats calls a «fun little side project» that will hopefully have some music ready for public consumption this year.
«I think we’ve laid down the foundation for, like, ten songs,» Coats tells Billboard. «I’m going to be singing. Alain’s definitely singing a bit. We might invite a couple of guests at some point.»
The guitarist laughs and adds, «I’m kind of along for the ride on this one. Those guys have known each other for years; I’m like the new guy. I don’t know if we’re gonna play live or what the deal is. I just know that I really enjoy hanging out with them and I’m learning a lot and we work very quickly; before I even feel like I’ve learned a song it’s like we’re hitting the record button. There’s a looseness that reminds me of Off! — certainly not the music, but the way we do the music.»
Coats says the as-yet-unnamed group came together earlier this year in Seattle after a Facebook exchange with Cameron. «I was like, ‘Dude! I’m a huge fan!'» Coats recalls. «I told him, ‘I consider myself to be a really excellent air drummer, and I have trouble air-drumming to some of your fills.’ And he was like, ‘Wow, that means a lot coming from you ‘cause I’m a huge fan of yours.’ We became instant friends.»
Cameron then told him about a musical project he, Shepherd and Johannes had started in 2008 that they wanted to rekindle. «So I was like, ‘Jeez, let me in on that,'» Coats says. «They invited me to Seattle and it was really incredible. There was just an instant chemistry and a really creative and open situation where everybody’s passing around the guitar and throwing in ideas. I sort of felt like I was in the grunge Beatles.»
Coats adds that, «I think we’re all in situations in our bands where we may not get to express ourselves fully the way we want to, and this is an opportunity to let some of those other colors out in our songwriting. All those guys can write songs. They can all sing. They can all play guitar and all different instruments. Those guys are top-level musicians — I sometimes feel like, ‘What am I doing here?'»
“We’re all fans of a broad spectrum of music,” Coats says, explaining the quartet’s sound tends to be «really heavy and doomy, but it’s really all across the board.”
“It’s a little bit more laid-back than I would’ve thought, but in a good way,” he continues. “There’s some kind of heavy, bluesy moments and then there’s some really beautiful stuff, too. It’s a little bit like ‘Superunknown,’ that kind of era of Soundgarden, mixed with Alain’s kind of Stevie Wonder vibe. And they call me the secret weapon; I’m a little bit rough around the edges, but I have a lot of good ideas.»
The group did some more recording during late April and early May in Los Angeles, but it’s taking a second seat to everyone’s day jobs. Shepherd is on the road with Soundgarden, who will begin a North American summer run with Nine Inch Nails, while Cameron is logging time with Pearl Jam. Meanwhile, Coats is on and off the road with Off! playing select dates over the summer to promote its latest album, «Wasted Years,» as well as a European tour in October.

A principios de los 90 las bandas de rock que tomaron todo venían en su mayoría de una escena urbana de arte punk rock, una escena más o menos indie. Eso era más ‘straight edge’ que otra cosa. Ese ‘straight edge’ de acuerdo al hardcore DC, nada de strippers y borracheras. Las bandas de Seattle tenían la reputación de meterse drogas pero eso es realmente estúpido. Todas esas bandas limpitas new wave de los 80 se metieron más drogas que todos los drogatas juntos de Seattle juntos 100 veces, por eso esas bandas ya no están juntas. Se metieron montañas de coca a lo Tony Montana y no puedieron ni pueden funcionar. Recuerdo tener amigos y conocidos que venían a los conciertos y se decepcionaban porque no teníamos fiesta en el backstage.

“In the early 90′s the rock bands that took over all came from more of like an an urban art punk rock scene, an indie scene. That was more straight edge than not, in a way. That’s straight edge defined by DC hardcore, definitely not strippers and booze. Seattle bands got a reputation for drugs, but it’s kind of silly really. All of those clean cut new wave bands of the 80′s did more drugs than all of the Seattle druggies put together times 100, that’s why those bands are gone. They did Tony Montana piles of coke and can’t function. I remember having like sort of friends and acquaintance dudes that I would meet come to shows and be disappointed that we didn’t have a party backstage.”
