Si recordáis, a finales del pasado año unos fans italianos de Foo Fighters pusieron en marcha una campaña por medio de la que querían recaudar 40.000 euros y juntar a 1.000 personas para tocar el “Learn to Fly”. El objetivo lo lograron y organizaron el espectacular acontecimiento hace pocas fechas dejando testimonio gráfico de ello.

Según ha explicado uno de los asistentes, un grupo de profesionales se situó en el centro “para servir de referencia para cada cada tipo de músico. Grabaron demos y colgaron recomendaciones en la web para los participantes.

Supongo que el hecho de que tuviéramos luces LED haciendo como de metronomos junto a unos buenos baterías (lo cual, por ejemplo, para nosotros los guitarristas hizo que aún pudiéramos oírlos bien pese a que los amplis estaban bastante altos) sumado a un gran conductor cuadró el círculo.

One thousand musicians banded together in Italy to perform the Foo Fighters’“Learn to Fly” all at once in an attempt to woo the band to come play a show for them. Let’s repeat that — 1,000 musicians. A thousand.

“The Foo Fighters are not in Romagna since 1997, it’s time to get them back, but we need a crazy idea,” the description on Rockin’ 1000’s website explains. “We have to organize something that kicks ass worldwide and can be seen by Dave Grohl: We will ask one thousand rockers to play one of their songs, all together and at the same time.”

And they did it — magnificently, after more than a year of work. “What we did here is a huge, huge miracle,” the event’s creator Fabio Zaffagnini explained. “One thousand rockers that came from all over the nation at their own expense, and they just did one song — your song. We ask you, the Foo Fighters, to come play for us.”

Mark Lanegan está desenterrando algunas demos de principios de los 2000 para un nuevo lanzamiento titulado Houston (Publishing Demos 2002) que saldrá a través de Ipecac Recordings el 21 de agosto. Estos se crearon poco después de la ruptura de Screaming Trees y muchos de ellos nunca llegaron a un disco de estudio. Tenemos el estreno de «No Cross», que se puede escuchar a continuación. También podéis echar un vistazo al tracklist del disco y a la portada del LP, que fue realizado por Jon Langford de los Mekons (que están en Nueva York esta semana).

Mientras tanto, el sello británico de Mark, Heavenly Recordings, celebra su 25 aniversario con el lanzamiento de unos cuantos singles especiales para la ocasión. Uno de ellos es Mark Lanegan y Beth Orton haciendo una cover del hit de 1988 de Marc Almond «Your Kisses Burn,», que fue un dueto con Nico. Puedes ver eso arriba.

Ani Difranco tiene una frase en su canción de 2012, «If Yr Not,»que dice lo siguiente: «Si no eres más feliz a medida que te vas haciendo mayor / entonces es que la estás cagando». La banda de Rock alternativo Veruca Salt no parecían realmente infelices en su apogeo a finales de los 90s, pero es nada más escuchar los diez primeros segundos del primer album de la banda en cerca de una década, Ghost Notes, cuando vemos qué bien se lo están pasando ahora.

También aparentemente son diez los segundos en los que el cuarteto quieren enseñar que son Veruca Salt, lo que significa que suena descaradamente a aquella década de oro. Es un movimiento audaz: cambiar de formación varias veces en los años 90 y principios de los 00s, quedándose lejos de lanzar material nuevo en cerca de una década, y volver con música que suena tan deliberadamente juvenil como «Seether», su debut de 1994. De hecho, tal vez aún más juvenil. Gracias en gran parte a las armonías pop insumergibles de Louise Post y Nina Gordon, Ghost Notes tiene más brillantes, canciones terminadas que su debut, American Thighs, o el aún más valiente Eight Arms To Hold You.Podemos comprender con ello que un sentimiento de pelo sucio grungero ha sido lo que les ha llevado a crecer y a convertirse en esto.

Ani Difranco has a line in her 2012 song, «If Yr Not,» where she sings, «If you’re not getting happier as you get older / Then you’re [messing] up.» Chicago alt-rock band Veruca Salt certainly didn’t seem unhappy in their heyday in the mid- and late-’90s, but it’s apparent within in ten seconds of the band’s first album in nearly a decade, Ghost Notes, how much more fun they’re having now.

Also apparent within ten seconds is the quartet’s intention to double down on sounding recognizably like Veruca Salt, which means sounding unabashedly decade-specific. It’s a bold move: changing lineups several times in the ’90s and early ’00s, stepping back from new material for a full decade, and returning with music that sounds as deliberately youthful as «Seether,» its 1994 debut single. In fact, maybe even more so. Thanks in large part to unsinkable pop harmonies from Louise Post and Nina Gordon, Ghost Notes has brighter, rounder edges than their debut, American Thighs, or the even grittier Eight Arms To Hold You. What read then as a dirty-haired, grungy rebellious streak has been injected with exactly the lighter-hearted joie de vivre Difranco’s lyric insists is the key to growing up.

Después de unas pocas semanas tras su aparatoso accidente, Dave Grohl ha vuelto a subirse a un escenario de Foo Fighters. La ocasión tuvo lugar en el RFK Stadium de Washington, donde la banda celebraba el veinte aniversario del lanzamiento de su primer disco, homónimo, contando para ello con varios invitados: Buddy Guy, Gary Clark Jr., Heart, Joan Jett, LL Cool J y Trombone Shorty. Junto a un trono digno del mayor de los reyes, Dave Grohl sigue demostrando aquello de que «show must go on».

Last month, Dave Grohl fumbled his femur on-stage, resulting in him having to complete the gig with a paramedic beside him. He then tweeted an X-ray image of his leg and, sadly, had to cancel their appearance at Glastonbury. However, Grohl was only down for a few weeks and last night, the Foo Fighters played a gig in Washington, DC, their first since his accident. For the occasion he had special guests: Buddy Guy, Gary Clark Jr., Heart, Joan Jett, LL Cool J and Trombone Shorty.
