El pasado fin de semana, los creadores de «Millenial Sadness» me hicieron una entrevista relacionada con la música, el grunge, la poesía y algunos de mis poemarios. La charla fue muy interesante y me sentí completamente cómodo hablando con ellos. Es un proyecto reciente de mucha calidad y pasión que intenta hacerse un espacio dentro del mundo de Youtube y el formato podcast, así que no dudéis en echarles una mano.

Weiland y su banda tocan el sábado en el FireKeepers Casino en Battle Creek. Entre conciertos, Weiland también está ocupado en el estudio (no en la cárcel, como informó falsamente TMZ el mes pasado), pero se tomó un tiempo para charlar conmigo sobre el concierto en FireKeepers, su banda de apoyo y cómo la industria de la música ha evolucionado desde que él empezó con la música.
P: Has estado tocando desde los noventa. ¿Qué es lo que te motiva para seguir tocando?
R: Yo hago conciertos, en realidad, por los fans. Por la energía que va y viene entre los fans y la banda. Si los fans son muy enérgicos, entonces hacemos que todo gire hacia otra dirección, porque nos da energía, y la energía que demostramos en el escenario vuelve a los fans, por lo que es una relación simbiótica en la que no se puede estar el uno sin el otro. Hacer grabaciones es algo que me encanta hacer por mí mismo. Quiero decir, siempre espero que los dioses del rock te sonrían y puedas sacar un gran disco con canciones muy exitosas en la radio y en Internet, pero en última instancia, lo hago todo por mí mismo. Tengo que estar contento y satisfecho conmigo mismo más que nada. En este disco, hasta el momento, tenemos ocho canciones terminadas, y estamos en el ocho de ocho de la genialidad.
Q: ¿Qué tenemos que esperar del concierto que das en el FireKeepers Casino?
R: Estamos tocando cosas de nuestro nuevo álbum, «Blaster», que saldrá en noviembre. También tocamos un poco de música de STP, Velvet Revolver y algo de nuestro material en solitario más antiguo, y alguna cover de vez en cuando. Por lo tanto, es un buen montaje de música. Con los Wildabouts, te espera un gran concierto de Rock And Roll. Se puede decir que tenemos una gran química en el escenario, y estoy seguro de que nuestros fans lo verán cuando lleguen. Realmente hemos perfilado nuestros conciertos y nos convertimos en una gran banda de Rock. ¡Cuanto más ruidoso seas, más ruidoso será!
P: Cuéntame más sobre tu banda de apoyo, Wildabouts
R: Es como Tom Petty y los Heartbreakers, no en el sonido, sino en el alma. Me han estado apoyando desde cuando yo era un artista en solitario, durante unos nueve años. Conozco a estos chicos desde hace mucho tiempo. Confío en ellos musicalmente, y también son amigos muy cercanos. Era sólo una forma natural de estar en contacto. Habíamos hablado de lo que queríamos hacer en cuanto a hacer un registro y el tipo de sonido que quería lograr, y pensaban muy parecido a mí, así que todo está rozando la perfección. Nos reunimos y ensayamos, hacemos alguna pre-producción sacamos dos o tres canciones y grabamos eso, y luego volvemos a los ensayos , escribir, demos y entrar a grabar más. El nuevo álbum está sonando increíble.
Q: ¿Cómo crees que ha cambiado la industria musical en estas décadas?
R: Bueno, ya no hay casi lugares donde comprar CDs, prácticamente. Tampoco quedan demasiadas estaciones de radio. Tienes un trabajo establecido para ti, pero tienes que hacerlo de diferente manera. Pero, tocar en vivo es lo mejor y lo que solía ser una gira para promocionar un álbum, ahora es crear un álbum para promocionar tu gira, casi siempre. Pero hacer discos es en realidad mi parte favorita de todo el proceso.

Weiland and his band perform Saturday at FireKeepers Casino in Battle Creek. Between gigs, Weiland is also busy in the studio (not in jail, as last month’s false TMZ story reported), but he took some time off to chat with me about the FireKeepers show, his backing band and how the music industry has evolved since he first started making music.
Q: You’ve been performing since the ‘90s. What motivates you to keep playing shows?
A: I play the shows, really, for the fans. The energy that goes back and forth between the fans and the band. If the fans are really energetic, then we crank it up another notch, because it gives us energy, and our energy we’re cranking on stage feeds the fans, so it’s a symbiotic relationship in that you can’t have one without the other. Making records is something I love doing for myself. I mean, you always hope the Gods of rock will be smiling down on you and you’ll have a big album and really successful songs at radio and online, but ultimately, I make them for myself. I have to be pleased and satisfied myself more than anything. This record, so far, we have eight songs finished, and we’re eight for eight on the awesomeness meter.
Q: What should we expect from the show you’re bringing to FireKeepers Casino?
A: We’re playing stuff from our new album, “Blaster,” which will be out in November. We also play some STP stuff, Velvet Revolver stuff and some of our older solo stuff, and a cover here or there. So, it’s a nice montage of music. With the Wildabouts, expect a great rock ‘n’ roll show. You can tell we have great chemistry on stage, and I’m sure our fans will see it when they come. We’ve really honed our show down and become a great rock ‘n’ roll show. The louder you are, the louder we’ll be!
Q: Tell me about your backing band, the Wildabouts.
A: It’s like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, not in sound, but in soul. They’ve been backing me up since when I was a solo artist, so for about nine years. I’ve known these guys for a long time. I trust them musically, and they’re also my very close friends. It was just a natural way of getting together. We had talked about what we wanted to do for as far as making a record and the kind of sound that I wanted to achieve, and they were very akin to that, so it’s gone really seamlessly. We get together and rehearse, do some pre-production and come up with two or three songs and record those, and then we go back to rehearsals and writing and demoing and going in to record more. And the new album is sounding amazing.
Q: How would you describe the change the music industry has experienced over the past few decades?
A: Well, there are no more places to buy CDs, pretty much. There aren’t many radio stations left. You have your work set out for you, and you have to go about it a different way. But, playing live is king and it used to be tour to promote an album, and now you make an album to promote your touring, for the most part. But making records is actually my favorite part of the whole process.

As for a Hole reunion, Love is optimistic that she, Eric Erlandson, Melissa Auf der Maur and Patty Schemel will play in 2015, and she insists that her strained relationship with the band is a thing of the past. «It’s more important for me to act right now than to play rock ‘n’ roll,» she says. «Me and Melissa and Patty and Eric have rehearsed a few times. In order to pull that off, we’d have to make some music that’s relevant to now, and we’d have to get a modern producer. I’m not going to do the oldies circuit. My relationships with Melissa, Patty and Eric are all great. At this point in my life, no one is my enemy. Any grudges or issues with that past? I’m done with it.»

Si. Me consuelo al pensar que hay alguna causa y un poder superior de alguna clase. No estoy asociado a ninguna religión en particular pero eso me da una especie de tranquilidad. Te diré que soy fan de Soundgarden. Siempre me intimida lo que es capaz de hacer Cornell con su voz. Lo digo como un halago – creciendo en los 70, escuchando música rock, cada cantante podía cantar la hostia de agudo y yo pensaba, “Bueno, no puedo ser cantante porque mi rango no es tan agudo”. Cuando aparecieron Soundgarden me recordó a esa clase de gran cantante de rock, en plan, “¡Hostia puta!” Me cabreaba que cantara tan bien. ¡Yo no tengo la capacidad de cantar así! Pero me encantaría probar cualquier cosa en un escenario en el que no parezca un idiota, claro.

Brody Dalle: T-Dog, do you believe in God?
“I do. I take comfort in thinking there’s some purpose and higher power of some sort. I’m not affiliated with any particular religion but that gives me some sense of comfort. I’ve had some dark days through the years and been through some shit that makes me think there is some reason here and it’s beyond just physics and biology.”
Ben Shepherd (Soundgarden): Is there a Soundgarden song you’d want to sing with us when we go on tour together? None of us can sing Half from Superunknown, would you give it a try?
[Chuckles] “I’ll tell you, I’m a fan of Soundgarden. I’ve always been in awe of what Cornell’s capable of doing with his voice. I say this with flattery – when I was coming up in the 70s, listening to rock music, every singer could somehow sing high as shit, and I thought ‘Well, I can’t be a singer because my range isn’t that high.’ When Soundgarden appeared it felt reminiscent of that same kind of great rock singer, like ‘Goddammit!’ I was pissed off that he could sing that well. I don’t have the skill to sing like that! But I’d be happy to try anything in a scenario where I don’t look like an idiot, sure – if I can contribute.”
