Seattle alt-rock supergroup Mad Season weren’t around long, but they cemented their legacy with one great album, 1995′s ‘Above.’ On April 2, Sony Legacy releases the three-disc ‘Above: Deluxe Edition,’ and Diffuser.fm is honored to be giving away a copy. Our one lucky winner also gets a Mad Season T-shirt, which we’re guessing pairs nicely with a long-sleeve thermal undershirt or ratty thrift-store cardigan. To enter, just retweet the contest announcement (see the big button below) and follow @diffuserfm and @loudwire on Twitter.
While the prize tee is pretty sweet, the real draw here is the music. Mad Season marked a collaboration between Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready, Alice in Chains singer Layne Staley and Screaming Trees drummer Barrett Martin, and several of the ‘Above’ cuts featured fellow scene giant Mark Lanegan on vocals. In addition to the remastered original album, the ‘Deluxe Edition’ includes a CD and DVD of the group’s final live performance, as well as one previously unreleased tune and three new songs, all of which find Lanegan stepping in for the late Staley and singing over music intended for Mad Season’s aborted sophomore effort.
The contest ends at 11:59PM EST on Wednesday, March 20. Click here for a complete list of rules. Good luck!

Barrett Martin says Layne Staley and John Baker would be proud of Lanegan’s contribution to the reissue of «Above»

Hey Folks, I want to say a few things about this new Mad Season box set because it gives me great honor and happiness to release the first of 5 bonus tracks that are included in the new “Above” deluxe edition. This song, “Locomotive”, now streaming on the Rolling Stone link below, was recorded with myself, Mike McCready, and Baker Saunders back in 1996 when we were working on basic tracks for the second Mad Season album. It features Mark Lanegan on vocals, my former band mate from Screaming Trees, who was also an honorary member of Mad Season. Mark co-wrote two of the songs on the “Above” album, those being “Above” and “Long Gone Day”, and he is also featured singing those songs with Layne on the DVD that is included in the box set. There is no other singer in the world but Mark who could have sung these songs in the way that Layne would have intended, because those two understood each other better than anybody. Mark was one of Layne’s closest friends, and the 3 bonus songs that he wrote lyrics for, and sang on, are a tribute to both Layne and Baker, and I know they would be proud of Mark’s contribution to their memories. And I personally believe, after overseeing this entire process with Mike, that this is going to be a beautiful package that all fans of Mad Season will enjoy. The original album “Above” has not been altered, and we included these 5 bonus tracks as a memoriam to our friends, and nothing more. And by the way, Peter Buck of REM co-wrote and played guitar on one of these bonus tracks back in 1996, because he also loved Mad Season and was a friend of Layne and Baker. We played our first shows at Peter’s nightclub in Seattle, The Crocodile Cafe! So as we release these songs to the world, please remember that they were done in the spirit of love and friendship, because that’s the way Layne and Baker were as human beings. They loved people first and foremost, and they did not judge anyone. I always thought those were the finest qualities any man could have; love and non-judgment. And those are the qualities they would want from all of us in the world today. I wrote an essay about that magical period of time, which is included in the booklet of the box set. It’s about the healing power of music and the interaction we all had together, as we made that album. And while we’re at it, let’s not forget Skerik (Nalgas Sin Carne), who played tenor saxophone and percussion on “Above”, as well as on the bonus tracks. Or Brett Eliason, who co-produced “Above” and helped us put this entire collection together. Remember, Mad Season was more than just 4 people; it was a family of Seattle musicians who loved music and loved each other. That’s why it was a special band from the start.
